I can identify with today's Substack. From December 2018 to March 2020, I visited my mother in the nursing home. At age 94, after surviving a fall which caused a broken leg, she lost all her remaining cognitive abilities. I would visit her in the nursing home each day from 4pm to 530pm. She never knew who I was. She thought I was just a friend. But those 15 months together gave great comfort to both of us. It was the only time she spoke; she smiled, we held hands. I am grateful that I had those last 15 months with my mom while she endured dementia.
